Blastomussa merletti (Blasto Coral)

Looking for a vibrant, fast-growing coral that actually thrives in the dimmer areas of your tank? The Blastomussa merletti is an absolute gem in the reef keeping hobby. With its dense clusters of small, fleshy polyps, this LPS (Large Polyp Stony) coral brings spectacular color and texture to the lower levels of your aquascape.

Unlike its cousin, the Blastomussa wellsi, the merletti features significantly smaller, tightly packed polyps that grow on a branching, tubular skeleton. This makes them fantastic growers—a single polyp can rapidly sprout new baby heads and form a stunning colony, especially when fed regularly.

At UKReef Hampshire, we love Blastomussa merletti because it is incredibly rewarding for beginners and seasoned reefers alike. It is the perfect solution for adding a pop of glowing color to those tricky, shaded spots where other corals might struggle.

Quick Care Guide:

Care Level: Easy to Moderate. They are very adaptable to home aquariums as long as water parameters remain stable.

Temperament: Peaceful. They do not have long, aggressive sweeper tentacles, but you should still give them enough room to expand their fleshy polyps without touching neighboring coral species.

Placement: Middle to Lower rockwork. It is recommended to mount them on exposed lower ledges or rubble. Try to avoid placing them directly on a sandy bottom, as they can quickly become dirty from sand-sifting tank mates or detritus buildup.

Lighting: Low to Moderate (75-150 PAR). Blastos are one of the few corals that actively appreciate dim lighting. If exposed to light that is too intense, their flesh can over-inflate, develop bubbles, or bleach.

Water Flow: Low to Moderate. Provide gentle water movement to keep their surfaces clean and deliver nutrients. Avoid strong, direct currents that will cause the polyps to constantly retract or potentially tear against their skeleton.

Feeding: While photosynthetic, they have very hungry mouths! They will readily accept spot-feedings of mysis shrimp, krill, or LPS pellets 1-2 times a week. Regular feeding is the secret to encouraging them to rapidly sprout new heads.
