Frogspawn Coral (Euphyllia divisa)
Looking for an iconic, flowing centerpiece with incredible texture? The Frogspawn Coral is one of the most legendary and heavily collected Large Polyp Stony (LPS) corals in the reefing hobby, famous for bringing massive amounts of hypnotic movement to your aquascape.
It gets its name from its totally unique tentacle structure: instead of single tips like a Torch or Hammer, each flowing tentacle branches out into multiple swollen, knobby tips that look exactly like a cluster of frog eggs. Available in stunning colour combinations—from classic toxic greens and purples to highly prized bi-colours and metallic peach morphs—they are an absolute standout under blue actinic reef lighting.
At UKReef Hampshire, we love Frogspawns because they are incredibly rewarding to grow out, and they are perfect for building a stunning "Euphyllia Garden," as they can often be safely placed right next to your Hammer corals without stinging each other!
Quick Care Guide:
Care Level: Moderate. They require a stable, mature reef tank with consistent Alkalinity, Calcium, and Magnesium to properly build their branching stony skeletons.
Temperament: Aggressive. At night, they will extend long sweeper tentacles to clear out competing corals. Give them a wide berth from other species, though they can generally touch other Frogspawns and Hammers without issue.
Placement: Bottom to Middle. Secure the stony skeleton firmly to your rockwork, making sure the fleshy polyps have plenty of room to expand in all directions during the day.
Lighting: Moderate. They thrive under mid-level lighting. If placed directly under high-intensity LEDs, they will bleach and retract; if the light is too low, their vibrant colours will slowly fade to brown.
Water Flow: Low to Moderate. This is the absolute key to success! They need a gentle, randomized sway to keep detritus off their flesh. ⚠️ Important: Never blast them with direct, heavy wavemaker flow. The sharp internal skeleton will easily slice through their delicate flesh, leading to infection (like Brown Jelly Disease) and tissue loss.
Feeding: Highly Recommended. While they absorb a lot of energy from your reef lights, they are hungry, active eaters. Turn off your flow 1-2 times a week and gently target-feed them meaty foods like Mysis shrimp or high-quality LPS pellets to fuel explosive growth and massive daytime expansion.
