Zoanthids (Zoa Frags & Gardens)
Want to turn your reef rockwork into a glowing, multi-coloured carpet? Zoanthids (or "Zoas") are the ultimate collector's coral and an absolute staple for any reef aquarium.
Often referred to as the "flowers of the sea," these stunning, button-like polyps come in almost every neon colour combination imaginable. From deep, speckled purples to radioactive greens and fiery oranges, Zoas look absolutely spectacular popping under blue actinic lighting. Whether you are picking up a single frag plug of a rare designer morph or grabbing a fully encrusted "Zoa Garden" rock, they are incredibly rewarding to keep.
At UKReef Hampshire, we love Zoas because they are practically bulletproof, fast-growing, and perfect for adding massive splashes of colour to the lower and middle sections of your aquascape!
Quick Care Guide:
Care Level: Very Easy. Zoas are incredibly hardy, making them the perfect choice for beginners or newly cycled tanks.
Temperament: Peaceful, but fast-growing. They don't have sweeper tentacles to sting neighbors, but they will encrust and grow rapidly over rockwork. Give them their own "Zoa Island" on the sandbed if you want to contain their spread!
Placement: Bottom to Top. They are highly adaptable and will happily encrust almost anywhere you put them.
Lighting: Low to High. They are not fussy, though moderate lighting usually brings out their most vibrant colours. If they are stretching their stalks upwards, they need more light; if they are flattening out tightly against the plug, they are getting plenty.
Water Flow: Moderate. They need enough flow to keep detritus from settling between the polyps, but not so much that they are blasted shut.
Feeding: Fully photosynthetic. They get most of their nutrition from your lights, but they will happily absorb broadcast-fed amino acids or micro-plankton (like Reef Roids) to boost their growth rate.
