Heliofungia (Long Tentacle Plate Coral)
Looking to add incredible, sweeping movement to the lower levels of your aquarium? The Heliofungia, commonly known as the Long Tentacle Plate Coral, is a stunning, free-living LPS (Large Polyp Stony) coral that makes a perfect centerpiece for your sandbed.
Often mistaken for an anemone due to its long, flowing tentacles and vibrantly colored tips, this coral provides constant motion without the risk of wandering around your tank and stinging everything in its path! Because it is a solitary, free-living species, it boasts a unique disc-shaped skeleton that thrives when placed directly on soft substrate.
At UKReef Hampshire, we love the Heliofungia for its spectacular feeding responses and the dynamic energy it brings to a reef.
Quick Care Guide:
Care Level: Moderate
Temperament: Semi-aggressive (Ensure you leave plenty of space around it, as those beautiful long tentacles pack a sting and can reach neighboring corals!).
Placement: Bottom / Sandbed only. Avoid placing them on rocks, as their fleshy undersides can easily tear on sharp edges.
Lighting: Moderate
Water Flow: Low to Moderate (Just enough to keep its tentacles gently swaying, but not so strong that the tissue is blasted against its skeleton).
Feeding: While photosynthetic, they will truly thrive and expand when spot-fed meaty foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or high-quality LPS pellets 1-2 times a week.
