Hammer Coral (Euphyllia sp.)

Looking for an iconic centerpiece that offers incredible movement and explosive colour? The Hammer Coral is one of the most recognizable and highly prized Large Polyp Stony (LPS) corals in the reefing hobby.

Named for the distinct, anchor- or hammer-shaped tips on the end of each fleshy tentacle, this coral creates a stunning visual display as it sways back and forth in the current. Available in a jaw-dropping variety of colours—from toxic neon greens and deep purples to highly sought-after bi-colours and ultra-golds—Hammer Corals fluoresce intensely under blue actinic lighting. Whether you choose a clustering "branching" variety or a show-stopping "wall" specimen, it will instantly draw the eye and bring your aquascape to life.

At UKReef Hampshire, we love Hammer Corals because they provide that premium, high-end aesthetic while being incredibly rewarding to grow out into massive, sweeping colonies!

Quick Care Guide:

Care Level: Moderate. They require a mature aquarium with stable Alkalinity, Calcium, and Magnesium to properly build their dense, stony skeletons.

Temperament: Aggressive. Hammers can and will send out long "sweeper tentacles" at night to sting neighboring corals. Ensure you give them plenty of clear space, though they can often be placed safely next to other Euphyllia species like Frogspawns.

Placement: Bottom to Middle. Secure the stony base firmly to your rockwork, ensuring the fleshy head has plenty of vertical and horizontal room to expand fully during the day.

Lighting: Moderate. They thrive in moderate lighting. If placed directly under high-intensity lights, they will bleach; if the light is too low, they will lose their vibrant colouration and slowly recede.

Water Flow: Low to Moderate. This is crucial! They need a gentle, randomized sway to keep detritus off their flesh. ⚠️ Important: If you blast them with direct, heavy flow, the sharp internal skeleton will cut through their delicate flesh, leading to infection and tissue loss.

Feeding: Highly Recommended. While they get most of their energy from your reef lights, they are very active eaters. Turn off the flow 1-2 times a week and gently target-feed them meaty foods like Mysis shrimp or dedicated LPS pellets to fuel rapid growth.
