Firework Clove Polyps (Clavularia spp.)
Want to add a mesmerizing, explosive pop of neon to your reef? Firework Clove Polyps are an absolute showstopper.
Named for their dazzling appearance under blue actinic lighting, these soft corals feature daisy-like polyps with delicate, feathery tentacles. The center of each polyp glows with vibrant, contrasting streaks of neon green, yellow, or orange that look exactly like a bursting firework. As they catch the water flow, the tentacles sway gracefully, adding incredible movement to the lower sections of your aquarium.
At UKReef Hampshire, we love Firework Cloves because they offer high-end, designer colours but are incredibly hardy and beginner-friendly!
Quick Care Guide:
Care Level: Very Easy. They are incredibly forgiving of water parameters and will thrive in almost any established tank.
Temperament: Peaceful, but invasive! They do not have stinging tentacles, but they grow rapidly by spreading a purple, ribbon-like mat over the rockwork.
Placement: Bottom to Middle. ⚠️ Important: Because they grow so quickly, we highly recommend placing them on an isolated rock on your sandbed (a "Clove Island"). If placed on your main rockwork, they can quickly encrust and overtake slower-growing corals!
Lighting: Low to Moderate. They are very adaptable. If the light is too intense, they may not extend their polyps fully. Lower, bluer lighting will bring out their best "firework" colours.
Water Flow: Moderate. They need a gentle, varied breeze. You want enough flow to make their feathery tentacles dance, but not so much that they are blasted flat and forced to close.
Feeding: Fully photosynthetic. They do not require target feeding. However, because of their feathery tentacles, they are excellent filter feeders and will benefit greatly from broadcast feeding with coral aminos or micro-plankton powders like Reef Roids.
