Premium Grafted Favia (Brain Coral)
Looking for a true one-of-a-kind collector's piece that will completely steal the show? A "Grafted" Favia is one of the rarest, most visually striking Large Polyp Stony (LPS) corals you can add to your reef, offering a totally unique look that standard brain corals simply cannot match.
Grafting occurs when two completely different colour morphs of the same coral species naturally fuse together and grow as a single, unified organism. The result is a jaw-dropping, split-colour appearance—often featuring a dramatic clash of neon greens, toxic yellows, and deep bleeding reds sharing the exact same skeleton. Under blue actinic lighting, this creates an incredible, highly sought-after contrast that immediately draws the eye.
At UKReef Hampshire, we absolutely love Grafted Favias because no two pieces are ever exactly alike. They are the ultimate addition for an LPS collector looking for a premium, fast-growing showpiece that stands out from the crowd!
Quick Care Guide:
Care Level: Moderate. They are highly robust and reliable growers, but as a stony coral, they require a stable, mature reef with consistent Alkalinity, Calcium, and Magnesium levels to support their skeleton.
Temperament: Aggressive. While they look like peaceful, fleshy domes during the day, they will deploy long, stinging sweeper tentacles at night to clear out competing corals. Ensure they have a solid perimeter.
Placement: Bottom to Middle. They do best placed on an isolated rock or a lower ledge where they have plenty of room to encrust and eventually grow outwards into a massive, multi-coloured dome.
Lighting: Low to Moderate. They naturally prefer the lower, shaded halves of the reef. Blasting them with high-intensity LEDs will quickly cause them to bleach and lose that incredible grafted colouration.
Water Flow: Low to Moderate. A gentle, broad, and indirect breeze is all they need to keep sand and detritus from settling on their tissue.
Feeding: Highly Recommended. Favias are fantastic, greedy eaters! Turn off your flow 1-2 times a week and target-feed them meaty foods like Mysis shrimp or high-quality LPS pellets. For the best feeding response, feed them just after the lights go out when their tentacles are fully extended.
