Superman Rhodactis (Mushroom Coral)
Looking for an indestructible burst of comic-book colour to carpet your lower rockwork? The Superman Rhodactis is a highly sought-after mushroom coral that delivers an intense, premium aesthetic without the demanding care requirements of delicate stony corals.
Named for its iconic, striking colour combination, this premium morph features a deep, fiery red or bright orange highly textured bubbles and a blue base. Unlike standard, smooth mushroom corals, Rhodactis are heavily textured and grow to an impressive, fleshy size. Under blue actinic lighting, the contrast between the blue base and red vesicles creates a jaw-dropping, glowing focal point that spreads easily across your aquascape.
At UKReef Hampshire, we highly recommend the Superman Rhodactis for anyone—from complete beginners setting up their first tank to seasoned veterans looking for an ultra-hardy, fast-multiplying pop of colour to fill the shaded sections of their reef!
Quick Care Guide:
Care Level: Very Easy. Practically bulletproof and highly forgiving of minor parameter swings, making it an incredible choice for newer reefers.
Temperament: Semi-Aggressive. While they don't have sweeper tentacles, they do carry a mild sting and will slowly expand and multiply over the rockwork. Leave a little space between them and your more sensitive stony corals.
Placement: Bottom to Middle. They do best attached to a piece of rubble on the sandbed or placed on the lower, shaded ledges of your main aquascape where they can slowly carpet the rock.
Lighting: Low to Moderate. These mushrooms do not like being blasted with high-intensity LEDs. If they start reaching upwards like an umbrella, they need a bit more light; if they shrink and pale, they are getting too much.
Water Flow: Low to Moderate. They prefer a gentle, lazy current to keep detritus from settling on their textured flesh. If the flow is too strong, they will become stressed, detach from their rock, and float away.
Feeding: Not Required, but Appreciated. They are fully photosynthetic and get most of their nutrition from your lighting. However, they will happily wrap up and consume meaty foods like Mysis shrimp or high-quality coral powder if gently target-fed, which will massively accelerate their growth and splitting.
