Premium Leather Coral (Sarcophyton spp.)

Looking for the ultimate beginner-friendly coral to start building your reef? Leather corals are an absolute staple in the hobby, famous for their rugged hardiness, rapid growth, and fascinating textures.

Unlike stony corals, Leathers lack a hard calcium skeleton. Instead, their fleshy bodies expand and sway beautifully in the current. Depending on the exact variety, they might grow into thick, branching fingers, cabbage-like folds, or beautifully textured lobes. Coming in a range of earthy tones, glowing greens, and soft pinks, they are fantastic for filling empty spaces in your rockwork and giving your tank a natural, established look.

At UKReef Hampshire, we cannot recommend Leather Corals enough for those new to the hobby. They are incredibly forgiving, highly adaptable, and serve as excellent "indicator corals"—telling you exactly when your water flow and parameters are right!

Quick Care Guide:

Care Level: Very Easy. They are nearly bulletproof and will happily tolerate the minor water chemistry swings common in newer aquariums.

Temperament: Peaceful, but with a twist. While they don't have stinging tentacles, leather corals are known to release natural chemical compounds into the water to secure their territory. If you are keeping them in a mixed reef with LPS or SPS corals, we highly recommend running activated carbon in your filtration system.

Placement: Bottom to Middle. Ensure they are placed securely on your rockwork with plenty of room to expand—they can grow quite large!

Lighting: Low to Moderate. They are highly adaptable to almost any lighting setup, though moderate lighting will help them maintain their best shape and coloration.

Water Flow: Moderate to Strong. This is vital! Leather corals require varied, relatively strong flow to keep detritus from settling on their flesh and to help them shed their skin (see our pro-tip below).

Feeding: Fully photosynthetic. You do not need to target feed these corals. They derive their energy from your reef lights and by naturally filtering dissolved nutrients from the water.

💡 UKReef Hampshire Pro-Tip (The "Shedding" Phase): Don't panic! It is completely normal for Leather Corals to suddenly close up, shrink, and develop a shiny, waxy film over their skin. They are not dying! They are just shedding a layer of mucus to clean themselves of algae and waste. Given a few days and good water flow, the film will peel away, and they will open up looking better than ever!
